Getting A New Kitten? Here Are 5 Things To Consider

Aug 9, 2024 | Kildare Vets News

Are you bringing a new feline friend into the home? Getting a new kitten is a very exciting time, but it can be a big responsibility for new pet owners. Don’t worry, we are more than happy to help your purrfect new pet live their best life. Here are 5 things to consider when getting a new kitten.

Vaccinations

It is important to get your new kitten vaccinated to help protect them from severe, life threatening diseases. Your kitten should get their first set of vaccinations at 8-10 weeks old and their booster 2-3 weeks later, followed by a booster vaccination every year.

Pet Health Plan

Signing up your new kitten on a health plan is very beneficial as it helps keep up with routine preventative care on a fixed budget. It is the most cost-effective way of caring for your pet’s health and wellbeing. Our health plans cover the following: vaccinations, parasite treatments, discounts on neutering, unlimited vet consults, nail clips etc. Click here to view our very own pet health plans and special offers.

Nutrition

Finding the right diet for your kitten is essential for healthy growth and development. At A Pets Life we sell Gym Cat Premium Pet Food, made with natural ingredients and no additives, giving your feline friend the purrfect balanced, healthy diet. Click here to shop.

Neutering

It is a good idea to get your kitten neutered once they are 4 months old. Female cats get spayed and male cats get castrated to prevent unwanted pregnancies. There are many health benefits of neutering such as decreased risk of FIV disease and Pyometra. Neutering also improves behaviour in male cats, your pet would be less likely to try escape and get into fights with other cats.

We are currently offering HALF PRICE Cat Neutering for the rest of 2024! View our pinned post on our Instagram @kildarevetsurgery or give our practice a call at 045 521 507 for more information.

New Routine

Spending quality time with your kitten is important to develop a strong bond. Kittens need a lot of attention the first few weeks of their life so it is good to set new routines during this period. Teaching them how to use the litter tray and implementing a feeding schedule are some things to keep in mind when helping your new kitten adjust in their new home.

We believe pets live their best lives through wellness, fitness, diet and vet care. These 5 elements of pet care are important for your kitten’s wellbeing and we are more than happy to help you through this exciting new chapter of you and your pet’s life.
